FIFA SOCCER 2003 TIPS AND HINTS

PlayStation®2 by Danny Isaac

  • Pay attention to the shot power bar. Control your shots to make sure the keeper has to make a save.
  • The combination of player runs (L1) and through ball (Triangle) can be deadly. Send your player on a run and just before he goes offside send a through ball in to his path.
  • When defending be patient. Sprinting while defending or lunging in will only allow your opponent to turn and leave you dead. Hold your ground, gradually close down the passing lanes and then box him in.
  • Learn to master the EA SPORTS™ Freestyle Control; with correct timing you can often create chances out of nothing.
  • Remember to use your whole team -- pulling players out of position will create holes in your formation and leave you open to a counter-attack. Instead, switch to a more appropriate player for that position on the field.

  • When shooting on goal, try aiming for different areas of the net in order to have a better chance of beating the keeper. Aim towards the net to shoot high, aim away from the net to shoot low. Aim to the left of the net to shoot left and aim to the right of the net to shoot right. Using a combination of these directions will allow the user to pick the corners with deadly accuracy.
  • Make use of the open passing model available on the PSX. Watch the power meter closely at the bottom of the screen to determine the correct amount of power for your pass. The longer the button is held, the more powerful the pass will be.
  • Take advantage of the ?Through Pass? on the [TRIANGLE] button. Often a well-placed ball into space can send your striker alone on goal.
  • Take advantage of the two skill moves located on the shoulder buttons [L2 & R2]. A perfectly timed ?Sideways Shimmy? or ?Hurdle? can be the difference between a clean break on goal and losing the ball to a well-timed tackle.

  • Shoot when the keeper is moving -- you can catch him going the wrong way by kicking back to the far corner.
  • Move towards a pass if it looks like it might be intercepted.
  • Don't always sprint.
  • When two players are competing for a header, the one who goes up last will win, but don't be too late!
  • On a cross, the later you press the header button the more power you will get.
  • Use runs to get your striker ahead of his marker before crossing.
  • Avoid bringing defenders out of position.
XBOX™ by Joe Nickolls

  • Mastering the through pass is key. Aiming shots where the competition doesn't expect them is one way to get a real competitive advantage. Try aiming through the crowd to a receiver on the other side.
  • Don't forget to send your players on a run when you're in a good position to cross or pass. The left trigger sends them on their way -- capitalize on that.
  • Make sure you use your whole squad when you can. There are lots of quality players that may not be on the starting lineup.
  • Don't be afraid to change your formations! When you're a goal or two up, protect that lead with a defensive strategy, etc.
  • Remember -- there is no magic bullet player. Passing is key. Running from one end of the pitch to the next without a serious challenge just won't happen.
  • Lead the keeper to you when coming in on goal, and quickly passing to a waiting striker -- to catch the keeper in a bad position.
  • Don't be afraid to pass the ball back. Better to set up a good play rather than charge in and look for help later. Again, calling players up to run is a great way to get into position on the fly.
Nintendo GameCube™ by Joe Nickolls

  • A great way to score goals is to run down the sideline and do a one timer in front of the net. For a one timer pass to a player in front of the net and hit shoot before the player receives the pass.
  • Lots of passing helps, just running down the pitch will often result in loss of possession.
  • Passing back then forward is a good way to prevent the AI from intercepting the ball.
  • Try drawing the keeper out of position, then passing the ball to a teammate that?s open and ready for a shot.
  • Shooting power is an often-overlooked tactic. Don?t hold the button down to the maximum power all the time, as you?ll find some of the best shots come form a gentle tap. The higher the power, the less accurate the shot can be as well.
  • Practice your free kicks. Putting a spin on the ball will give a very realistic shot that can fool even the toughest oppontent.
