Throwing Punches with FaceBreaker K.O. Party Producer Dave Phan
Community Manager Alain 'Sk88z' Quinto - So tell the community who you are and what your role is here at EA Canada.
Dave Phan - My name is Dave Phan and my role on FaceBreaker K.O Party was that of Producer and Designer. I'm happy to be participating in our EA Online community and having the opportunity to talk about FaceBreaker K.O. Party.
Sk88z - So what are the big differences between the Wii version and the next gen versions that recently came out? Anything exclusive to the Wii?
Dave - While the Wii Version of FaceBreaker shares some similar features and designs from the 360/PS3 version, we very deliberately focused on differentiating the two versions by taking advantages of the unique features and qualities of the Wii console:
Controls: There's a great opportunity here to create engaging gameplay using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk versus the button configuration on the 360/PS3. We wanted to achieve two primary things with the Wii controls which was to get people standing up and playing because it's just plain fun to "live the fight" in your living room and for everybody out there to be able to "pick-up and punch" and just enjoy the game right out of the box.
Multiplayer Game Modes: One of the very best things about the Wii is the fact that it's the life of the party when you have a group of friends or family members hanging out. FaceBreaker K.O. Party has 2 unique multiplayer game modes not found on the 360/PS3. The Punch-O-Matic is a wild matchmaker that challenges up to 4 competitors in a series of mini-games and challenges against each other. T.K.O is our tournament style game mode that pits teams of fighters against each other in strategic battles to determine who is The King of the Ring.
Visual Style: One of things that we're most proud of with FaceBreaker K.O. Party is how GOOD the visuals in this game look from the characters and environments to the dazzling particle effects. This is one good looking game on the Wii that we feel our team took a different approach with from 360/PS3 and succeeded. Our take on the style of everything you see in the game was to give it life on the Wii from the more chiseled characters to more outlandish environments (fighting in a trailer park in the middle of a tornado!?)
Sk88z - Are the characters in the Wii version those the same as the next gen versions and can people expect them to fight similarly or are there any differences? What character do you relate with most and why?
Dave - The full cast of original combatants from the 360/PS3 version make the hop over to the Wii version, but we managed to pull off a few tricks to get a special character into the Wii version who was not "playable" in the 360/PS3 version. In their transition over to the Wii, some of the characters got tuned and tweaked to adapt to the new controls and there are some changes on how they handle and fight between the platforms. As to the character that I related with? That's definitely got to be Ice. He's one bad mother*shut yo mouth*!
Sk88z - How can I play with my friends (multiplayer game modes) and can I play the game online (speak to the consumer who is constantly questioning)?
Dave - FaceBreaker K.O. Party supports 1-4 players. You can engage friends and family in straight-up one on one fights or get all 4 players taking turns getting into the ring in our unique multiplayer game modes Punch-O-Matic and T.K.O. for a real K.O. Party experience! With regards to Online play, this is something we deliberated over significantly early in our development. We weighed out all the pros and cons and priorities with what we wanted to achieve and the end result was to focus on building a strong foundation of gameplay first and foremost. If we couldn't invest and succeed on that front, then Online play would be meaningless. So that's where we switched our focus to and left Online for something potentially down the road...
Sk88z - Am I swinging with my arms to punch or are there buttons to press if my arms get tired?
Dave - Our gameplay controls are a combination of gestures with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck along with button presses to support all the moves. Most of us out there are familiar with the Wii Sports Boxing experience where you can really get-up and PUNCH and that's something FaceBreaker K.O. Party allows the player to do as well, but at the same time we realize there's only so much energy available to sustain that style of gameplay. That's why our control scheme easily allows players to switch gears and focus on smaller and tighter gestures to pull off the same moves. Swing for the fences if you want to intimidate your opponents or be that crafty player who's all about pulling off their moves with deadly efficiency!
Sk88z - What's the coolest thing in the game?
Dave - Hmm...coolest thing in the game huh? For me it would be the those super close fights against a friend or family member where the next knockdown wins the fight and you're both on your last bit of life. It becomes a strategic game of cat and mouse where the tension is high and it's just a great feeling to deliver that finishing blow.
